Itinerary
Day 1: Thursday, Mexico City
Our air flights take us to spectacular Mexico City with over 26 million inhabitants living in the Mexico City valley. The Aztecs lived here from AD 1325 to AD 1519 when the Spaniards began the conquest. We will transfer and check into our hotel. (No meals provided)
Day 2: Friday, Mexico City
This morning we will visit the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan. Occupied from about 200 BC to 900 AD, Teotihuacan was one of the largest populated cities in the world during its peak. The inspiring pyramids of the Sun and Moon attract millions of visitors to this most popular archaeological zone in Mexico. This may have been the great city built by King Jacob of the Gadianton Robbers (See 3 Nephi 7). Returning to Mexico City in the afternoon, we will stop at the Shrine of Guadalupe where we will learn about the origin of the Catholic Church in Mexico. (Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 3: Saturday, Mexico City
This morning we will visit the National Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, one of the most spectacular archaeological museums in the world. Touring the museum will provide us with an excellent review of our tour and expose us to many beautiful exhibits ranging from ancient pottery to gold and jade jewelry. After lunch we will have the opportunity to visit the National Palace, National Cathedral and the remains of an Aztec temple in downtown Mexico City. We will also visit the Mexico City Temple. We will return to the hotel for our last night. (Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 4: Sunday, Oaxaca
Following church services, we will transfer to the airport for our flight to the colonial city of Oaxaca, the capital city of the state of Oaxaca. We will see the LDS temple here prior to checking into our hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 5: Monday, Oaxaca
Today we will begin at the city of San Jose Magote and visit the small ruins that remain of one of the earliest cities in the western hemisphere. Dating back to 2000 BC, this area has been proposed as the land of Moron where several generations of the Jaredites lived in the New World. The architectural style of San Jose Magote is reminiscent of that found in ancient Mesopotamia, probable location of the tower of Babel where the Jaredites came from. After our visit, we will then continue on to the archaeological site of Mitla, home to some of Mesoamerica's finest mosaic stonework. We will visit the great palace of the once powerful High Priest of Mitla who was even more powerful than the king. There will be time at Mitla to shop the local handicraft market before we make our journey back to Oaxaca. On our return trip we will stop in the village of Teotitlan where the local people make hand woven rugs made of wool and dyed with natural colors made from vegetables and insects. Finally we will visit the “Tule Tree”, a monster cypress tree that is estimated to be over 2000 years old. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 6: Tuesday, Oaxaca
Following breakfast we will take a short ride to the hill top site of Monte Alban, a place that was occupied from 500 BC to AD 700. We will analyze the history of this remarkable site which demonstrates a relationship with the Nephites and Mulekites beginning at the reign of Mosiah. Returning to Oaxaca, we will visit the Santo Domingo Cathedral and Museum which houses several artifacts from Monte Alban, including an incredible find of gold, silver, turquoise, and other items recovered from an ancient tomb. After lunch we will visit the village of Coyotepec where the local artisans make beautiful black pottery. We will also see the Oaxaca temple prior to catching a flight to the coastal city of Veracruz. (Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 7: Wednesday, Flights home
Transferring to the airport, we will check in for our flights home. Our journey to the Book of Mormon lands has come to an end, but we will take with us memories that will last a lifetime.
Provided meals are noted at the end of each day. Prices and itineraries are subject to change.
The second edition of Exploring the Lands of the Book of Mormon can help you in preparing for the tour. Once you have made your initial deposit, we will send one complimentary copy of the new edition.
